Brand Revealer #08: "Illustrations can give life to the value propositions" with Tyler Mishá Barnett
New Q&A with illustrator, Tyler Mishá Barnett + thoughts on personal branding in an era of personal brands
👋 Hello brand enthusiast, how are you doing today?
Let’s discover our new Brand Revealer of the month. I also share an observation about personal brands in our era + some cool inspiration from bright brands I discovered.
💡Every month we have a guest for our short and sweet Q&A. Longer interviews will stay on the blog.
My goal is to demystify the word Branding so that anyone can understand its paradoxes and implement their version of Branding. Collecting an eclectic panel of definitions and visions of what Branding is and implies. Showcasing those who do, use, and expand Branding: Brand revealers.
Short Q&A - Brand Revealer #08
I asked a few questions to Tyler Mishá Barnett, a creative I came across on WATBD after she shared her work. The freshness of her style and vision had to be highlighted for all of us.

Branding is made of trial and error. The positioning takes effort, time and dedication. How can entrepreneurs recover from a branding that doesn't resonate yet with their audience?
If your branding isn't resonating with your audience, you have to take an empathetic approach to understanding why. Put yourself in the customer's position to see your brand from their perspective. It is also important to seek feedback from your audience to understand directly from them what is not resonating. Branding does not have to be stagnant. You can always expand and/or refine where needed to form a better connection with your consumer.

What is your best branding story from clients, yourself or an iconic brand you look up to?
I created the branding for a podcast called Come Thru, Black Sheep. This is one of my favorite projects because I used an illustration request as an opportunity to create a full brand identity. The goal was the create something artful and vibrant that would capture a viewer's eye immediately. The responses I have gotten online about the artwork have been amazing and are a direct reflection of the project goal.

Illustration is a superpower in Branding. What has this expression taught you about the process of branding?
Approaching branding as an illustrator has taught me the impact that visual elements outside of the logos can have on the brand. Illustrations can give life to the value propositions, mission and vision of a company. Illustrations color those words and aid in solidifying the brand identity for the consumer.

Is there a common DNA among the black brands you have worked with? If so, how does it relate to the challenges they had to overcome in order to spread their message?
The common DNA is to amplify and celebrate Black people and culture. They seek to show us with integrity, beauty and light.

🔦 Branding in an era of personal brands…
There will always be a passing of the baton
I was inspired to talk about this topic after a post by
As we are more daring in building our spaces, we are more revealing of the nuances of what it takes to build a brand. The reason why people buy what you do never really changes. It is so intangible and it is due to a sur-mesure code: YOU.
In the pursuit of progress and resonance, how can you help them get to their next step? (it can be a mood, a skill, a mindset shift, or even a strategy). As the steps never end, we will always support those who want to create their spaces as we are. And we will always look up to those who are doing it and are ahead of us. There is space for everyone, whatever their journey and pace. Now, the question is, how does AI pivot the building of a personal brand?
🤩 Bright, they are!
🇫🇷 La ligne diagonal (How do we navigate entrepreneurship and anti-capitalism? A powerful angle by Annie Picard)
The Velvet Underground & their branding (One of the most unique and underappreciated bands of the ‘60s)

If your brand was a colour of the day, what would it be? Morning, noon, night…
Video, words, illustration, animation… you choose. Short and sweet.
Confusing the brand and the artist behind the brand.
I hope you enjoyed the read of the week. Feel free to share it with peers, friends and family. Sharing is loving.
